Survival dog 6 days in the desert after the fall of the plane

After falling from an airplane and roaming through the Atacama Desert for 6 days, “Gaspar the miracle dog” was recently rescued and reunited with his owner.Surviving the harsh Atacame Desert for almost a week is a challenge for any human, let alone a scared dachsund that happened to have fallen out of an airplane at landing. So it’s no wonder that 2-year-old Gaspar has been dubbed a “miracle dog” for defying the odds and making it out alive out of the driest desert on Earth.

Gaspar was traveling to the city of Iquique in northern Chile with his best friend Ligia Gallardo. The two-year-old dog traveled with Gallardo inside an animal carrier box in the cargo compartment of the plane. But as soon as the plane landed, Ligia had an unpleasant surprise when she found the shipping box empty. With the accidental opening of the cargo compartment, the box that carried Gaspar crashed and opened, startling the little dog, who ran out of the plane. Gaspar headed toward the Atacama Desert, where he wandered for almost a week before being found.

No one knows exactly what happened, but airline officials suspect that Gaspar’s cage must have fallen from where it had been placed, when the airplane landed. The impact was so strong that the pet carrier door popped open and the dog was accidentally let loose. Then, when the cargo hold opened, the scared and disoriented dachsund jumped out and headed straight for the nearby Atacama Desert.

When she heard the news from her boyfriend, owner Janice Cavers went on social media to an organized search to find Jasper. The airline and a unit of the local army also participated in the search, but although it has been spotted wondering in the desert several times, Gaspar can not be rescued. Finally, after six days of research, the two-year-old Miracle Dog was rescued and now returned to his beloved arm.

Paula Bravo, a veterinarian who attended Gaspar after rescuing him, told reporters in Chile: "He was harsh, stressed malnutrition, was missing for six days and lost a lot of weight." After losing about three of the nine kilograms he weighed before his ordeal, Gaspar now feels greatly improved and gained weight.

The airline has been responsible for the escape of Gaspar and is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether the accident was caused by a human error.
